You’ve probably heard of the most common phobias like Arachnophobia, Claustrophobia, or Ophidiophobia…but have you heard of Methyphobia? Zythophobia? How about Oenophobia?
We’ve got everything you need to know about these 5 unusual phobias related to alcohol.
What is Methyphobia?
Methyphobia, occasionally referred to as Potophobia, is a fear of alcohol. Classified as a specific phobia and considered an anxiety disorder, Methyphobia can manifest as physical symptoms, avoidance behaviors, and stress in situations involving alcohol. Methyphobics avoid drinking alcohol, encountering individuals who have been or currently are drinking, and avoiding situations where alcohol may be present.
Treatments for Methyphobia include various types of therapy such as talk, exposure, cognitive-behavioral, and hypnotherapy; some methyphobics have found support groups to be beneficial and, in severe cases, anti-anxiety medication may be used.
What is Oenophobia?
Originating from the Greek words oeno and phobia, Oenophobia is the fear of wine(s). Also known as Oinophobia, oenophobia is classified as a specific phobia. To be diagnosed as an oenophobic, a documented intense or unreasonable fear of wine must be present for at least six months. Although this fear of wine can be traced back to the Middle Ages, oenophobia is a relatively rare phobia.
What is Zythophobia?
Someone who suffers from Zythophobia, or a Zythophobe, fears and/or hates beer. The most popular reason cited for being zythophobic is due to the unhealthy nature of the alcohol content. However, some Zythophobes cite the brewing process as their reason for concern. They believe that, when consumed, the yeasts used to brew beer could lead to the consumer ingesting parasites.
What is Dipsophobia?
If someone suffers from Dipsophobia, they experience an abnormal and persistent fear of drinking alcohol. Derived from the Greek word dipsa, which translates to thirst, Dipsophobia is classified as a specific phobia, making the fear highly irrational. Severe cases of Dipsophobia are often linked to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, often manifesting as extreme cross-contamination OCD.
What is Nifaliophobia?
From the Greek words nifalio, which means sober, and phobia, a Nifaliophobic, or someone who suffers from Nifaliophobia, experiences the fear of sobriety. While it is common for individuals who struggle with substance misuse to feel anxious and apprehensive about getting sober, Nifaliophobia goes beyond normal anxiety to the point of overwhelming and debilitating fear.
