What is a Bottle Share?
A bottle share is a social gathering for beer lovers to share, enjoy, and discuss beer. Think of it like a beer tasting (or a wine tasting if you’re fancy like that), or beery show and tell and share where enthusiasts can discuss, drink, and learn about beer. Similar to other beverage tastings, there are bottle shares for everyone. Some are perfect for first-time beer drinkers, while others are specifically catered to the preferences of the most hardcore beer collectors.
What is the History of Bottle Share Events?
The idea of having a good time and sharing a bottle with friends is not a new one, but, like most things, has evolved over time into what it is today. Modern bottle service can be traced to 1988 when it was introduced at Les Bains-Douches, a Paris nightclub; the creation and popularity of holidays such as Open That Bottle Night, as well the ability of beer lovers to connect through social media, has also led to the rise of bottle share events.
Why Should I Attend a Bottle Share Event?
There are several reasons why you should attend a bottle share event. In addition to being a great way to socialize and meet other beer lovers, bottle shares also provide the opportunity to try beers that you may not otherwise be able to sample, and make amazing memories while continuing to learn about beer.
What Should I Know Before Participating a Bottle Share Gathering?
Almost everything you need to know about a bottle share is in the 5 Ps of Bottle Shares: Purpose, Pour Size, Participation, Proper Etiquette, and Preparation.
Purpose - The purpose of a bottle share is to try new beers, and to share and discuss them with friends and/or other beer lovers.
Pour Size - When it comes to bottle shares, it’s all about quality over quantity. Bottle share pours are typically around 2 or 3 ounces.
Participation - Unless stated otherwise, it is proper bottle share protocol for every participant to bring a minimum of one bottle to contribute to the experience, and share with the group.
Proper Etiquette - Bottle share etiquette is essentially taught in preschool: sharing (your beer), and keeping your hands to yourself (and not opening or offering anyone else’s bottle).
Preparation - Preparation is an important part of participating in a bottle share. Prior to attending the bottle share, you’ll need to select beer(s) to bring and share, and it doesn’t hurt to prepare some fun facts to tell the other participants about your beer of choice. To ensure an ideal bottle share experience, we recommend prioritizing your hydration, having something to eat, and planning a safe way to get home after the bottle share. Those 3 ounce pours can really add up!
The bottom line on bottle shares: Bottle share events are a great place to meet and mingle with other beer enthusiasts, try new beers, and maybe even learn something.
So, what do you think? Will you be attending a bottle share in the future?
