Out of all of the shopping holidays, Small Business Saturday is my favorite (though as a small business owner I admit I might be a bit biased!). But what is the history of Small Business Saturday? Why is it important? And how are we celebrating it? Keep reading to learn about the history of Small Business Saturday, and get the scoop on Small Business Saturday 2023. 

 What is Small Business Saturday? 

Small Business Saturday is an annual quasi-holiday that aims to celebrate and support small businesses, their owners, and the impact they have on their communities.

Small Business Saturday is the Saturday after Thanksgiving; Small Business Saturday 2023 is on Saturday, November 25th. 

When did Small Business Saturday start? 

The history of Small Business Saturday dates back to 2010, when American Express launched a campaign to provide exposure to small businesses, and to encourage consumers to do their holiday shopping from local businesses in their community. In 2011, Small Business Saturday became an official annual event, and was supported by various individuals, including President Obama, as well as organizations such as the U.S. Small Business Administration

Why is Small Business Saturday important?

Since it began in 2010, Small Business Saturday has continued to have a positive impact on small businesses and local communities. How big is the impact of Small Business Saturday? According to reports, in the last decade more than 120 billion dollars has been spent at small businesses on Small Business Saturday. That’s more than $12 billion a year! In 2022, Small Business Saturday sales at independent retailers and restaurants reached a record high of $17.9 billion! For a small business owner, sales on Small Business Saturday can easily be the best of the year.

How is Small Business Saturday celebrated?

Celebrating Small Business Saturday is easy; all you have to do is support your local businesses! While shopping at small businesses is always encouraged, we understand that money can be tight.
